Bay Area Chamber Celebrates Local Civics Bee Winners Advancing to State Competition with Eye on $100,000 National Prize
BAY CITY, MI – The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce proudly hosted its inaugural National Civics Bee local competition on April 21 at the Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center. This event, part of a nationwide initiative by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, aims to inspire middle school students to engage in civics and contribute to their communities.
The competition featured 11 student finalists, selected based on their compelling essays addressing community issues. These young scholars showcased their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, government, and civic responsibilities in a dynamic, quiz-style format.
Congratulations to our top three finalists advancing to the Michigan State Competition in Lansing on July 9th:
1st Place – Vivian, 6th Grade, Handy Middle School, ($500 prize)
Essay Topic: Expanding Access to Mental Health Services
2nd Place – Kenzie, 6th Grade, Handy Middle School, ($250 prize)
Essay Topic: Mental Health Awareness and Support
3rd Place – Harper, 6th Grade, Handy Middle School, ($125 prize)
Essay Topic: Plastic Bags and the Impact on Our Environment
These students now have the opportunity to compete at the state level, with the potential to advance to the National Civics Bee Championship in Washington, D.C. The national champion will receive a $100,000 529 college savings plan .
